Student recruitment marketing gets judged on channel performance, and it is usually decided somewhere else. The campaign brief, the creative and the media plan can all be right, and the number at the end of the quarter still depends on whether one course page could answer a question about fees.
That is an uncomfortable place for a recruitment team to sit, because the page belongs to a different team, on a platform owned by a third one, inside an estate nobody has consolidated. So the work that would move applications is not in the campaign plan at all.
Our August 2026 audit of 64 UK higher education websites measured the pages campaigns point at. Forty five percent keep course fees out of server rendered HTML, thirty four percent do the same with entry requirements, and thirteen percent split the course estate across more than one domain. Those are recruitment numbers as much as technical ones.
The journey, and where the spend leaks out of it
Recruitment is a long cycle with a hard deadline, and the website carries a different job at each stage. Most estates are built well for the first stage and the last, and thinly for the three in the middle where the decision is actually made.
Two rows are worth dwelling on. Consideration is where comparison happens, and it is the stage most likely to be missing facts, so the applicant completes the comparison on an aggregator that holds your numbers secondhand. Post offer is the stage nobody owns at all: nurture stops at the offer, while the applicant is still deciding between three of them.
Every channel needs a destination that can answer
Channel debates absorb most of the planning time. Destination quality absorbs almost none, and it is the variable with more leverage.
Paid search on course terms is the clearest case. The keyword bought a specific intent, and a brand or subject landing page discards it. The corrective work is in templates and internal routing, which is why SEO for universities and university website design are recruitment topics, not adjacent ones.
Organic and answer engine visibility follows the same rule with a stricter test: an answer engine can only quote a fact it can extract. Publishing course facts so answer engines can read them covers what that requires of the page.
The four handoffs that lose an enquiry
An enquiry crosses four team boundaries between the ad click and a human reply. Context is dropped at every one, and it cannot be recovered later.
The second handoff is the cheapest to fix and the most often ignored. The page already knows the course, the level and the intake. Asking for all three again in the form costs completions for no benefit. Pre-fill from the page context, keep the visible fields to what a human needs to answer well, and pass the rest as hidden values.
The fourth is the one that decides conversion. A specific answer within a day converts. A generic acknowledgement in four days does not, however good the campaign was.
Attribution that survives a consent banner
Recruitment reporting in this sector is fragile because the journey is long, multi device, and partly offline. Two habits make it hold up. First, capture the campaign parameters and the course context server side at submission, so the enquiry record carries its own provenance rather than depending on a cookie that may not exist.
Second, report on the stages you can count honestly: qualified enquiries by course, response time, enquiry to application rate, and offer to acceptance. Consent-gated analytics will always under-report sessions. Enquiry records do not.
What we would fix first, in order
- Course page facts in server rendered HTML: fee, entry requirements, duration, award, start date, mode.
- One owner page per course, with duplicates and finder result pages consolidated or de-indexed.
- Course aware enquiry forms with pre-filled context and the shortest honest field set.
- Campaign parameters and course code passed into the CRM as fields, captured server side.
- A named response time commitment for enquiries, measured weekly, by course area.
- Post offer nurture with pages behind it: accommodation, city, finance, arrival, all current.
- Open day booking joined to the course context the applicant arrived with.
What a course page has to answer before a campaign can work
Every recruitment channel ends at a page, and the page either answers the question the click was about or it does not. In the audit, the pages that campaigns pointed at were missing the fields that decide a shortlist, so the paid click paid for a second search rather than an enquiry.
The minimum set is short and it is the same for every institution:
- Total fee for the relevant fee status, and what it excludes.
- Entry requirements expressed in the qualification the applicant holds, including international equivalences.
- Duration, award, study mode and start dates, including January intakes where they exist.
- Application deadline, and whether the course is still open right now.
- One next action that matches the stage: apply, book an open day, or ask a named person a question.
Two tests catch most failures. Read the page on a phone at the width your traffic actually arrives at, and count how many taps it takes to reach the fee. Then read it as an answer engine would: strip the images, the video and anything rendered after load, and see whether the remaining text still contains the five facts. If it does not, the campaign is buying visits that cannot convert, and no amount of channel optimization repairs that.
What this looked like at the University of East London
The University of East London moved off Sitecore onto Drupal on Acquia with us, and rebuilt the estate as one platform rather than a set of pages. It is the closest reference point we have for this problem at full institutional scale, 125 years of content, students from 156 countries, and five distinct audiences reading the same site for different reasons.
The recruitment work started where this article says the spend leaks: the destination, not the channel. Course exploration and enquiry journeys were shortened, click depth reduced, and the enquiry path rebuilt so the page passed what it already knew into the form.
Four pieces carried the conversion work:
- Micro conversion mapping on the signals that predict an application: brochure downloads, open day registrations, enquiry completions, measured by course rather than in aggregate.
- Dynamic calls to action driven by behavior, so a returning visitor saw Continue your application rather than Learn more.
- Automated nurture journeys, with form submissions triggering relevant content and advisor follow up instead of sitting in a queue.
- A unified data layer joining analytics, CRM and form data, so enquiry to applicant could be read by course area weekly.
Geo targeted personalization ran at a 4 percent click through rate and exits fell 46 percent. The institution reported a 73 percent rise in applications and a 32 percent rise in enrollments across two years. Those last two are their numbers against their plan.
