OHCHR Design System -
Standardizing The UI Components

Services Offered

OHCHR-Design-System-Components

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is a critical entity within the United Nations, responsible for promoting and protecting human rights globally. Given its complexity and global reach, maintaining a consistent and user-friendly digital presence is paramount.

Axelerant partnered with OHCHR to standardize and structure its existing UI component library into a cohesive digital design system. The project aimed to address communication challenges among various stakeholders and streamline the maintenance of design components, ultimately enhancing the organization's digital interface.

The Problem

Maintenance Of Design System Components

The primary objectives of the project were:

  1. To standardize the UI components across OHCHR's digital platforms.
  2. To create a centralized repository that facilitates consistent communication of design information to developers, testers, and executives.
  3. To simplify the maintenance process by consolidating multiple FIGMA files into a single, unified design system.
  4. To integrate centralized code snippets within the design system, thereby eliminating errors in HTML implementation caused by distributed teams.

The Solution

Effective Collaboration And Standardization

  • Stakeholder Engagement And Collaboration: Engaging with stakeholders, including designers, developers, testers, and executives, ensured that the design system met everyone’s needs. Workshops facilitated open communication and collaboration to align expectations.
  • Audit And Standardization Of UI Components: A thorough audit identified inconsistencies in existing UI components, which were then standardized into a unified library within a centralized Figma file.
  • Development Of A Centralized Design System: A comprehensive digital design system was developed, complete with a library of standardized UI components, documentation, and usage guidelines, ensuring consistent design implementation.
  • Integration Of Centralized Code Snippets: To resolve HTML errors, centralized code snippets were incorporated into the design system, ensuring uniformity in code implementation across distributed teams and improving user experience consistency.
  • Training And Onboarding: Comprehensive training sessions were conducted to onboard stakeholders, providing tutorials and best practices for maintaining the design system's consistency and ensuring all teams were comfortable with its use.

Result

A Consistent, Centralized Design System

The implementation of the OHCHR digital design system had a significant impact on improving consistency, communication, and efficiency.

By transitioning to a centralized design system, OHCHR ensured a unified source of truth for all UI components, leading to a consistent user experience across digital platforms.

The system enhanced collaboration among stakeholders by providing clear documentation and guidelines, reducing miscommunication and errors.

The integration of centralized code snippets eliminated HTML implementation discrepancies, while streamlining the maintenance process, allowing teams to update the design system more efficiently.
